My teaching goals and philosophy

My goal as a teacher is to provide quality learning outcomes for each student.

I believe that as a teacher, I have a responsibility to facilitate learning that empowers students to become self-directed, independent learners with a love for learning. I believe that as a teacher, I need to provide learning opportunities that excite learners so that they will be motivated to become life long learners. As a teacher I must provide learning that allows students to understand that they can make a positive difference to their own future and where they see learning as something in which they participate, rather than it being seen as something that is 'done' to them.

I believe that students should be supported and allowed the opportunity to take a high degree of control over their own learning. They should be taught how to set targets and goals for future learning needs. I think that it is my responsibility as a teacher to encourage reflective learning, teaching thinking and metacognitive skills that will enable students to learn how to learn.

Through these kinds of learning experiences, my goal is that students will develop self-awareness and confidence in themselves as learners. I want students to be proud of their achievements. I believe that as a teacher, I have a responsibility to support and help students to become confident decision makers, and risk takers who feel excited about participating in new learning experiences. It is also my responsibility to provide opportunities for students to develop leadership skills

I think that as a teacher I need to create a learning environment where students become caring future citizens, where they gain a broader understanding of the bicultural and multi-cultural nature of their school and their world and where they recognise and respect the uniqueness of others. I believe I have a responsibility to develop globally citizens.

I also believe that as a teacher I have a responsibility to make students aware of natural and logical consequences related to the choices that they make where students will gain an understanding that there are consequences for their choices, decisions and actions at home, school, and in the community at large.

I believe that I have a responsibility as a teacher to provide the structures, the environment and the support to enable each student to meet with success, creating a classroom culture based on mutual respect and understanding, and inspiring all students to strive for their personal best at all times. I also believe it is my responsibility to establish and nuture the important and powerful partnership between students, teachers and parents/caregivers, with all parties working together in the best interests of the learner.

I believe I have a responsibility to be up to date with the latest in teaching and learning methods. I believe that we do not know for sure what knowledge our students will need to best prepare them for the future. What we do know however is that they will need to become life-long learners, able to adapt to the future changes which will inevitably have an impact on their lives. I think that teaching students how to learn is as important as developing their knowledge base and their understanding of the world around them. Students should be developing thinking processes critical for the information age, which enable them to know how to access the knowledge required, and more importantly, how to evaluate sources of information and the knowledge itself.

I think that teachers need to recognise that the way they work with students needs to change and they need to acknowledge that a different approach to teaching is vital. I think that teachers need to allow students to take greater responsibility for their own learning and to understand that this does not necessarily mean that there is a total loss of teacher control.
I think that students need to have more opportunities to be involved in making decisions regarding what to learn. I think that these are all very real issues that need to be addressed and discussed by teachers in collaborative professional practice forums.

I believe that where there is a clear and focused vision for student learning, which has been collaboratively developed, and where this is well communicated and understood by all, that positive change can be accomplished.
